Smart Home Networking

Smart home networking can be realized through the deployment of multiple networks, including the familiar data network, and the emerging control and entertainment networks as well. Now Advantech is poised to provide a series of ePlatforms to help our customers to connect the eWorld.

Data Networking

Control signals communicated between electronic devices are exchanged via a home network. Fire, gas, electric and water leak alarms can be triggered automatically, bringing a higher level of safety into any home. Security monitoring/detection can ward off potential trouble before it happens, regardless if the homeowner is at home or away. Central monitoring and control for heating and air conditioning, lighting and energy consumption during peak and non-peak times can greatly reduce utility bills and increase the efficiency of any home. Truly it can now be said: Home automation is no longer a mere dream.

Currently, control network types include LonWorks, X.10, CEBus and traditional RS-485/422. Advantech takes these variations into consideration and builds compatibility into its residential product line, including its newest residential gateway terminal. Advantech follows an open system structure, enabling key building sub-systems from multiple manufacturers, such as security, lighting, HVAC and security, to be easily integrated into a single smart building system. Advantech's terminal makes the network expandable, so additional devices can be conveniently added when needed. Interoperability of devices across a unified network eases integration and data exchange, simplifies installation and setup, and lowers overall cost.

Control Networking

Data Exchange in the smart home involves a combination of, data/voice communication over a range of wired and wireless mediums. Presently the market uses combinations of these that fit users' needs. WLAN, HomePNA, HomePlug, Bluetooth, VDSL and IrDA are some of the networking technologies used for Web browsing, e-mail, Video on Demand and VoIP.

Entertainment networks, on the other hand, take advantage of IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0 to handle high-speed digital signals for Home theater systems, Streaming video and other digital contents requiring large data transfer capability.

Power-line networking solutions use existing electrical outlets and power line, making them cheaper, simpler, and very flexible. Power lines provide another choice for economical data transmission.

Twisted pair phone-line networking is another alternative for data transmission. With existing and widely installed deployment of phone jacks and phone lines, twisted pair routing is both convenient and inexpensive.

Wireless Networks were implemented by Bluetooth, Home RF and IEEE 802.11 (11Mbps) technologies. These play key roles in connecting smart home networking devices seamlessly.
