New Low Power PC/104+ Computer from Advantech
Date: 2008/6/24

Advantech Embedded and Industrial Computing Group have just released a new Compact Embedded Computer—ARK-4153, a rugged PC/104+ system designed to go into the most remote, or extreme environments. ARK-4153 uses an extra low power AMD LX-800 CPU which consumes less than 6W of power. High shock and vibration resistance, plus an extended range of temperature endurance allows it to operate in inhospitable and remote locations. ARK-4153 incorporates Advantech’s new “Boot Safe“ feature which means the OS boots from the BIOS for ultimate reliability; even when the system has crashed or been subjected to virus attacks. All these features are combined into a stackable, modular aluminum enclosure suitable for wide temperature range outdoor applications.

With Advantech’s new “Boot Safe” feature a small portion of the OS is loaded into the read-only BIOS to ensure the system can always be accessed. Even if the system fails catastrophically due to hardware failure or virus attack, the pre-boot OS will always load allowing for critical maintenance and action; essential for embedded applications that operate in very remote areas. In addition, for extreme environments, shock requirements can vary and 10~

50g specifications are common. Sustained vibration can range from 5~20g, and vibration frequency can be 1,000 Hz, plus computer components can be subjected to -40~85° C temperature fluctuations. ARK-4153 passes MIL-STD-810F,514.5C-3 specification which is the shock/vibration compliance test for 60 min/per axis duration simulating 1000 miles of transportation. In addition, ARK-4153 can reliably operate in -40~75° C environment temperatures and the outstanding MTBF is rated at 26,040 (nearly 3 years) hours of operation.

Saving power is essential in industrial applications, saving power means reducing costs and increasing efficiency. ARK-4153 is designed for ultra low power consumption, even when fully utilized; the AMD LX-800 CPU only consumes 6W of power. ARK-4153 supports up to four USB 2.0 connections, four RS-232, line-in, line-out, dual LAN and VGA functions. ARK-4153 is ultra compact, robust and fanless and is suitable for a variety of critical indoor and outdoor applications. It offers superior resistance against harsh environments and the whole system is designed expressly to withstand environments in which shock and vibration are constant everyday events. ARK-4153 is available now, contact your local sales or visit the website for more details:

With online shopping becoming ever more common, retail is under heavy pressure from Internet commerce, which many consumers consider easier and more convenient. While retail retains the advantage of physically being where customers are, product hands-on and instant availability are often no longer enough.

What embedded designers had long hoped for is now here: a low-power, high-performance, Intel® architecture (IA) platform with a thermal design power specification (TDP)1 of less than 5 watts (W) that’s powerful enough to run common embedded operating systems. With TDP of just 2.0W (versus 35 watts for a typical laptop), the Intel® Atom™ processors Z530Δ and Z510Δ are bringing IA to places it’s never been before. Embedded designers are rethinking how far they can push designs by extending the benefits of IA to meet the demanding requirements of new embedded applications.
