Nursing Care
Date: 2009/7/3

Overview

In the nursing care process, Advantech's Mobile Clinical Assistants (MCA) and Point-of-Care Terminals integrated with nursing carts give clinicians and nurses the mobility needed in their jobs to access critical information at the point of care. With mobile computing technology, the quality of care has been greatly enhanced by streamlined workflow, accurate data recording, and reduced medication errors.

Designed to Help Improve Clinician Productivity
Based on the Intel Mobile Clinical Assistant (MCA) reference architecture, Advantech's MICA-101 incorporates Intel’s ethnographic research, hospital workflow studies, and extensive consultation with healthcare professionals, which led to MCA’s purpose-built reference platform. To streamline medication administration and charting, the MCA reference design integrates technologies that support the “five rights” of patient care: right patient, right time, right medication, right dosage, and right route.

Applications

Using a medical tablet PC or a medical computing platform on a nursing cart allows nurses to key in information as they visit patients, without having to return to a computer terminal to input updates. The medical computing system provides more accurate, timely response, and eliminates handwritten paperwork and storage.

The MICA-101 has a built-in 2.0 megapixel camera that allows easy photographing and video capture of patient wounds. The MICA-101 functions are further extended by wireless connectivity: Bluetooth, 3.5G, and 802.11A/G/N support. Wireless connectivity allows nurses to access up-to-date patient information from electronic medicalrecords at the point of care, enhancing clinical workflow, and reducing administrative workload.

Using the integrated radio frequency identification (RFID) scanner in the MICA-101 device, nurses can identify patients and verify themselves as authorized caregivers via a fingerprint reader. With a built-in barcode scanner, the MICA-101 helps to reduce transcription errors and delivers faster and safer healthcare. Via the optional webcam, healthcare professionals can optimize their workflow by having real-time visibility, convenient access to patient electronic records from the office or patient’s home, and direct communication with patients.

This video introduces how the MICA-101 passes the IPX4 water splash test. In this test, the MICA-101 is turned on before the test begins. The water jets shoot toward the center from a 180-degree semicircle, with a mean flow rate, per jet, of point zero seven liters per minute. After ten minutes of water assault, the MICA-101 is still running like a champ. The MICA-101 passes IEC60529 Edition 2-point-1, 2001-02 item IPX4, well exceeding the requirements of most normal clinical environments.
