Project Introduction
Alphatron Medical Systems based in the Netherlands, is a distributor of medical equipment to display, print, store and distribute images, sound and other medical data. They provide Web-based solutions for the acquisition, archiving and distribution of all medical images in hospitals, diagnostic centers, private clinics and healthcare groups. Additionally they specialize in: Patient Infotainment, specializing in bedside TV and telephone; trolley/mounting systems, with ergonomics and safety being the main concern; and medical monitors and peripherals, focused on safety and reliability. They design advanced configurations to meet specialized needs.
System Requirements
The Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) is the largest non-academic hospital in the Netherlands, offering clinical care, with a level I trauma center, various health care departments, andover 200 medical professionals.
Having up-to-date information, readily accessible to both the employees and patients at the MST is critical. Thehospital defined a project to deploy a Patient Data Management System (PDMS) in several critical areas within the hospital. Key requirements for the hospital were selection of a system which provided a large display and could be strategically placed, as well as providing an easy to use interface. The MST selected the Advantech POC-195. The project called for integration of the POC terminal in the Intensive Care Units, Medical Center, and Operating areas of the hospital.
System Description
The hospital recognized that Advantech’s POC-195 offered the performance and large screen size (19” LCD display) they needed, was easily mountable and backed with great service. The POC terminal is also EN60601-1 safety certified, and resistant to dust, spills and water damage, with its protected LCD display and sealed enclosures.
From the point of selection, through planning and installation, Alphatron has fully supported the Medisch Spectrum Twente in its selection of POC-195. Providing carefully detailed, upfront planning, the Alphatron deployment was a problem-free installation. Advantech assisted the effort with comprehensive advice, development and manufacturing services.
Conclusion
After deployment the hospital cited several benefits derived from the project’s success:
n Large display, flexible options and strategic placement in critical areas led to ease-
of-use and quick adoption by hospital professionals
n Transformation from a paper-based system to a digital-based system and
successful deployment of the PDMS system
n Improved quality and delivery of information throughout the hospital
n Efficient use of space in the ICU due to the POC-195’s form factor, minimal cabling,
and flexible mounting options
n Network isolation ensuring interference-free operations
As Medisch Spectrum Twente looks to expand its PDMS system to other areas, Advantech products will continue to offer Alphatron the ability to offer the hospital process automation and real-time data solutions to meet critical patient care needs.
