Jewelry Weighing & Packaging Machine
Date: 2009/6/12

Machine Automation
Location: Shanghai, China

Project Introduction:
Highly accurate weighing devices are critical for many industrial applications, especially ones that require high-precision processing. In recent years, these devices have started to include intelligent features and energy-saving functions such as measured electrical data, computing, network communication, real-time automatic control, automatic device adjustments and system self-diagnostics. One client of Advantech’s was looking to upgrade their jewelry weighing and packaging machinery with a powerful PAC to achieve high-precision driving with high-end capabilities.

System Requirements:
In the past this customer had been using a PLC combined with a touchscreen, whichwas causing them a lot of problems as years went by, such as difficulties in multi-axis linkage control, secondary process development, mass parameter access and patent protection. They were looking for a powerful new PAC to realize easy expansion capability with simple secondary development to achieve high-precision driving with high-end capabilities. Advantech's AMAX series was the easy choice.

Project Implementation:

AMAX-2050KW GX2-400 Machine Control Box with AMONet Interface
AMAX-2241/PMA  4-axis AMONet RS-485 Motion Slave Module for Panasonic Minas A
AMAX-2756SY 16/16-ch Isolated Digital Input/Output Slave Module
ADAM-4117 Robust 8-ch Analog Input Module with Modbus
FPM-3120G Industrial 12.1" SVGA Flat Panel Monitor

System Description:
The system uses Advantech's AMAX-2050FCE controller and realizes complicated processing by integratinghigh-precision driving motors and high-power variable frequency drives. Combing digital input and output control the system ensures high accuracy, achieving the integration and optimization of incorporated control. Through the built-in AMONet port, AMAX-2241/PMA and AMAX-2756SY can be managed by AMAX-2050FCE. AMAX-2241/PMA controls 4 Panasonic motors revolving the conveyer belt. AMAX-2756SY receives digital sensor signals and output digital signals to control LED indicator and buzzer. To get the weight information of the jewelry, ADAM-4117 is connected through RS-485 to measure the analog signal from the weighing-scale. Apart from the control part, FPM-3120 and its resistive touch screen functionality complete the system with flexible HMI.

Conclusion:
Through the use of Advantech's AMAX-2050FCE PAC and various function modules, the system's respond time has been greatly shortened, improving both reliability and accuracy. By integrating a high-precision motor driver and high-speed data acquisition card, energy efficiency has been greatly increased at a reasonable cost as well, reducing the overall energy consumption. With the help of high-speed computing, mass storage and versatile communication interfaces, the system now meets the requirements of rapid communication with high-precision weighing and quick data acquisition.

SUMMARY: The combination of declining PC prices and increased robustness of operating systems and softlogic control applications have resulted in enormous growth in PC-based control since the mid-1990s. But while the basic PC is standardized, not all PCs are equal – particularly when it comes to operating reliably in industrial environments...
