Solution: Environmental Monitoring
Location: Columbia
Project Introduction:
Water authority systems require multiple stations to be setup for water management and quality assurance. The Columbian government wanted to establish an automated water pressure measurement and monitoring system for their authority system in Bogotá. Advantech's solution enabled the pressure data to be read by a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) while all relevant data can be transferred to the main control center via cellular network with a wireless communication network backup system. This design ensures that all data can be transferred without interruption or information loss.
System Requirements:
The system required a wireless serial device server as the communication device for the RTU to allow all measured pressure data to be transferred via WiFi to the main control center. They also needed a rugged module to operate long hours without breakdown in the harsh environment of their treatment center.
Project Implementation:

System Description:
The RTU is used to measure the water pressure inside the pipes. It can monitor the water pressure then transfer the relative data back to central control center. In normal cases, the communications are sent via cellular line, but in the case of line failure, the EKI-1351 will switch to IEEE 802.11b/g wireless to ensure all data is sent. The system will use WiFi communications to get the data through the EKI-1351 from the serial port in the RTU.
Conclusion:
In this application, Advantech was able to easily meet the customers request by providing a highly rugged and versatile serial device server to ensure automated communications. The robust mechanism of the EKI-1351's metal enclosure makes it highly rugged, while its DIN-rail mounting makes it easy to install inside the cabinet. EKI-1351 supports RS-232/422/485, and offers high flexibility for user's application.
