Automated Scheduling System for Hydroelectric Power Stations
Hydroelectric Power Stations require complex automated scheduling systems to regulate their power generation processes. These systems can benefit from adopting a topological structure which combines reliable industrial-grade products and redundant ring networks. The backbone for such networks require at least two fiber optic rings to realize both link and device redundancy. All of these elements combine to provide excellent performance and high reliability with a automated operations, remote control, fault self-recovery and advanced network management functions.

Advanced Power Management Station
As energy saving and carbon reduction issues become more widespread, it is more important than ever to have advanced power management stations to measure, analyze and optimize power consumption to improve energy efficiency. A large corporation in Taiwan sought Advantech's Data Acquisition solution to help them develop a new power management station in order to improve their energy usage to reduce costs and their impact on the environment.

Embedded Network Communication in a Digital Substation System
Generally, power substation systems include control, signal, measurement, protection, automation and remote handling equipment. Power substation systems are used to compile the data from these various devices and send the information to the central control station. Due to the different communication/ device/ protocol requests, the system must support various I/O inputs and integrate all information for the control center.

Wind Power Generation Transmission System
China's national wind power capacity is expected to reach 30 million W by 2015. By conservative estimation, China's wind power capacity will be up to 80 million W by 2020. The dramatic increase in the number of wind power plants thereby requires a great number of wind farm information management systems and remote wind turbine monitoring systems. Since these systems are used in harsh environments, they need the support of managed industrial Ethernet switches with wide temperature ranges. Recently, a large manufacturer of wind power turbines purchased Advantech's EKI series as the main network switches for its management system.

Solar Thermoelectric Control System
The Sun is a huge source of abundant power, sending nearly 10,550 EJ of energy to the Earth every day. This is more energy in one hour than all the combined cities of the world use in one year. To try and harness this magnificent power, many countries have been investing in solar technologies for over 30 years. Today’s solar thermoelectric systems include reflectors, mirrors, heat insulating absorbers and advanced motion control technology. Advantech’s own Industrial Wireless Ethernet products are a perfect fit for many such applications due to their great performance, reliability and ruggedness.

Sun Tracking System for Solar Energy
Based on its very nature, solar energy isn't available 24 hours a day. Making the most of our suns energy requires highly efficient solar cells and advanced sun tracking systems. Sun tracking allows the solar cells to face the strongest sunlight while it is available, so they need to be able to detect the strength of sunlight in different directions to determine the best location for the strongest sunlight. The solar plates must be constantly adjusted to the correct angle and direction by the sun tracker system, which requires a multi-axis motion control system.

Remote Monitoring System in Wind Power Generation
Wind power generation systems are always installed in very harsh environments with extreme temperatures (for example, offshore environments might be below -10 C), with an abundance of dust and vibration. Under these circumstances, applying an IPC with a fan as the host platform will result in reliability problems and system crashes. One of our customers aimed to design a reliable power generation monitoring system, and they were looking for a compact platform that could be easily installed to replace their traditional IPC system.

Wind Power Turbine Control System
Conventional wind turbine controllers have only limited resources, and can only offer restricted monitoring and diagnostic functions. System developers expect controllers to not only monitor environmental conditions, temperatures and pressures in the hydraulic system, including rotation speeds and vibrations, but also allow remote management and diagnostics through a network.

Real-Time Testing System for Wind Power Generation Machine
The INER (Institute of Nuclear Energy Research) in Taiwan uses a Micro-Box Real-Time System to create a "Wind Power Generation Simulation Platform", which simulates the wind and blade models theybuild in Simulink®. Through this unique solution, INER can modulate the speed of the dynos based on actual wind direction and strength. Micro-Box is an affordable and robust multi-function platform for rapidly controlling prototype and hardware-in-the-loop test applications. The Micro-Box System is installed with Advantech’s UNO-2170, PCM-3712, and PCM-3718.

The Evolution and Elements of Robust PC-Based Control
SUMMARY: The combination of declining PC prices and increased robustness of operating systems and softlogic control applications have resulted in enormous growth in PC-based control since the mid-1990s. But while the basic PC is standardized, not all PCs are equal – particularly when it comes to operating reliably in industrial environments...
