Nurse Aiding System

Location: Japan
 Introduction Back to Top

In order to improve communication between hospital personnel and the patients, a Japanese company called SENSA, developed a humanized interface as a non-verbal communication tool for patients who are incapable of speaking to the nurse or doctor. Moreover, this system could be easily installed in the patient's home as an appliance for health-care.
 Application Back to Top

Before the nurse aiding system was adopted in the hospital, non-verbal communication between patients and medical staff was done in either handwriting or body language - a time-consuming practice, which usually caused a lot of misunderstandings.

Now, Panel PC's (PPC-102) have been installed beside the patient's bed and the patient can now easily communicate by means of the PPC's multi-media system. If the patient is unable to speak, he can use the touch screen interface to make his intentions clear. When a patient has hearing problems, the large screen (PPC-102T) will convey the doctor's or nurse's instructions. Moreover, the system helps remind the patient to take medication on time.

 System Back to Top

The nurse aiding system was the PPC-102T Panel PC as a Human-Machine Interface for patients and the medical staff. By connecting several special sensors to the COM ports, patients could operate the system by using the eyes, fingers, and voice. The proprietary software had been developed under Windows NT4.0 for better network functions.
 Benefits Back to Top

The PPC-102T was able to reduce the amount of miscommunications between patients and hospital personnel and provided real-time medical treatment. Since several units were installed in the patients' homes, it saved time. Patients did not have to visit the hospital that often anymore, whereas doctors did not have to go out on house calls. As a result, medical resources could be used for patients who were in urgent need.
